An absolute legend in the culinary world, Susan Feniger (chef/owner of Border Grill, Socalo, and BBQ Mexicana) has served on the LGBT Center's Board of Directors for 14 years. These are some of the L.A. businesses she loves to support.
Less"I think that the owner of John O'Groats, Paul Tyler, is the most incredible front-of-house person that I've ever met in all of L.A.," says Feniger. "He took over the restaurant from his parents, and it's an amazing place for breakfast: great coffee, great for meetings. I love down-to-earth places, and that's exactly what this is."
"Many people have probably recommended this place, but it's one of my favorites. I like The Godmother, extra spicy: It's a high-end submarine sandwich, and with those hot chilies on there, it's absolutely scrumptious. We'll get 20 of them when we want to give the staff a treat; everyone loves them."
"My favorite stand in Grand Central Market is Sarita's, which does unbelievable pupusas. The one I love the most is the loroco pupusa. Around the corner is Ana Maria's, where my favorite is the tongue gordita."
"This sushi place is wonderful. The husband-and-wife, Keizo and Yuki Ishiba, are very sweet. It's a great place for people who love sushi and sashimi, but it's also great for my wife of 26 years, who doesn't eat anything raw—all the cooked food is fantastic, too."
"This place is right on the beach in Santa Monica, and it's all about being able to sit outside, with no shoes on, your feet in the sand, and eat. I love that! It's mainly breakfast or lunch. They have a great burger."
Located at the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s flagship Anita May Rosenstein Campus, this café and community space is operated and staffed by graduates from the Center’s Culinary Arts program, a three-month training program that prepares LGBTQ youth and seniors for employment in the restaurant and hospitality industries. The revenue from the cafe is reinvested into the Center’s life-changing and life-saving programs. And, Feniger adds: "The coffee is fabulous, and the service is spectacular!"
"I love this little store: You can get a mandolin, Japanese gardening tools, and it's the most incredible place to get knives. It's where I buy all my Takayuki knives—those are the best knives around. I've been going here for probably 30 years."
"If I'm in Little Tokyo buying knives, I always stop here for yummy delicious ice cream. I love the caramel with boba in it—stupidly sweet but delicious."
"I love Indian food; it's one of my favorite cuisines. I love to go to Samosa House, get a warm chai, and shop for ingredients. The market has many different dals, and the spices are quite fresh, so that's where I get a lot of my ingredients when I'm making curries or saag paneer at home."
"This is a great Ethiopian market, where I go to shop for ingredients and to get Ethiopian bread."
