From its inception, punk outfit Rise Against has used music to highlight causes they care about, including animal rights. Bassist Joe Principe, a long-time vegan, shares his favorite spots he found while on tour to have a delicious vegan meal.
Less"A hometown favorite. Chicago Diner was my first introduction to a meat-free restaurant when I first was exposed to the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle. It was the go-to restaurant we would hit before attending shows at the legendary Metro (one of the best venues in Chicago). My favorite dish is the Tofu Scramble Deluxe. Simple, yet healthy."
"Nic’s is a more upscale, all-vegan restaurant that has the best Detroit-style pizza. I find it difficult to find a thick-crusted vegan pizza that tastes close to the traditional 'real' thing, but Nic’s cracked the code."
"First off, I’m an admitted coffee dork, and I spend a great deal of time searching out tasty coffee shops. With four locations in the East Bay, Timeless is on the top of my coffee shop list. They make amazing lattés (among other coffee drinks), and have an all-vegan bakery. Everything is so good, it’s hard to pick one thing that is my favorite, but the vegan waffles are hard to beat."
"Probably the best vegan sushi I have ever had. This restaurant is a little more upscale and usually requires a reservation, but if you can make your way in, you won’t regret it. I recommend the Philadelphia roll."
"The Tasty is vegan diner food at its finest. If you’re looking for a good vegan breakfast when you’re in Philly, then look no further. I love the French Toast!"
"I discovered this Italian vegan gem while wandering around Milan last summer and was floored with how good everything was. I’m glad to see more vegan options popping up in Milan every time I visit, and this was my favorite so far. The vegan gnocchi is amazing."
"Red Bamboo is a staple in the New York vegan scene. It’s one of those long-time spots that is on every touring band's list if they live by a plant-based diet. They serve vegan comfort food and do it so well. I recommend the creole soul chicken."
"The absolute best vegan tacos I have ever had. Penelope’s started as a food truck and opened their brick-and-mortar location last year. I can’t pick one thing as my favorite, so I recommend trying as much as you can while you’re there. It’s a great place to share dishes with the table."
"I visit this diner every time Im in SLC. Simple vegan diner food, but always tasty. My go-to is the tofu scramble."
"Black Water is a punk rock bar with an all-vegan menu. It’s delicious. While in Portland, If you’re looking for a quick bite with great music, then this is your place. Highly recommend the Philly Cheese Steak."
