Danny Pellegrino, host of the pop-culture podcast Everything Iconic, recounts funny and embarrassing stories from his life in his memoir, How Do I Un-Remember This?. He shares some of his favorite spots near his hometown of Solon, Ohio.
Less“This is my favorite bookstore in Hudson, Ohio. I grew up working at a bookstore that used to be in Solon, Ohio, but unfortunately that’s no longer. However, every time I make it back to Ohio, I always head on in to the Learned Owl—it’s just a cute, quaint bookstore. There’s nothing I love better than a bookstore. My all-time favorite movie is You’ve Got Mail—and the Learned Owl is very much The Shop Around the Corner vibes, if anyone’s familiar with that movie.”
“This is a small Italian market, and they make the best pizza, the best antipasto salad. It’s truly some of the best Italian food you can get, but it’s a market so you can get stuff to go, groceries. They have fantastic baked goods—during the holidays, we always get a bunch of cookies and sweets from there. My buddy Frank Alesci is the son of Jim, and every time I go home, he always hooks me up with great food. Did I say the pepperoni bread? The pepperoni bread is to die for.”
“People familiar with the area would know the waterfall in Chagrin Falls—it’s something that’s been featured in a bunch of movies and stuff. It’s the quaintest, cutest little town, and the Popcorn Shop overlooks the falls. It has a breathtaking view, and it’s beautiful to go—especially in the summertime—to get some ice cream or some popcorn or some candy. When I was a teenager, I met Molly Shannon there, and she really inspired me to follow my dreams and pursue a comedy career.”
“Yours Truly does these thing called the Notso Fries. They are these little potato wedges that they cover with cheese and all sorts of good stuff. I will move mountains to get to the Notso Fries, they’re so good. I love the club sandwich, I love a lot of the food. It’s a sit-down restaurant, but really the Notso Fries, to me, are one of the best things ever.”
“Chagrin Cinemas is one of the movie theaters I went to growing up, and it’s still there. It’s a great little movie theater—I spent so much time there, going to see everything. I still have some of my ticket stubs from there. I saw the movie Superstar there. I think I saw it 10 times, and so I have at least 10 ticket stubs. I am a rom-com movie lover, and I saw You’ve Got Mail there. I saw anything and everything there.”
“Chicago Deli is another sit-down restaurant, and it’s a staple for Solon High School students. It’s a place that we would go to before football games, we would go there on Friday nights, we would go for brunch on Sundays. It’s just a hometown staple, and the food is great, the atmosphere is great. But more than that, it’s a place that you knew you could go and see people you knew and loved. It’s a favorite hometown spot.”
“I’m not a huge sports junkie, but I do like to hit up the driving range—and they have a great driving range. I took lessons here when I was a kid. There’s a story in my book about an unfortunate golf cart incident, and although the golf cart incident happened in another state, I spent a lot of my formative years golfing at the Grantwood Golf Course—and I live for riding around in the golf cart. I enjoy the driving range, and it’s just a beautiful course.”
“This is a beautiful rec center, and it’s open to anyone. You don’t have to be a college student to work out there. It’s just a humongous sports complex that has anything you could need to work out. It has an indoor track. It’s gorgeous. I suppose now it’s almost been a decade since they did the renovation, because they did it when I was in college there. When I go back to Ohio, if I want to work out, I will head to the rec center because it’s beautiful—and I’m a proud Kent State alum.”
“I mention this in my book How Do I Un-Remember This?, but I think everyone needs to have a chocolatier. When you want to give someone a thank-you gift or an anniversary, housewarming, or birthday gift, I think chocolate is the way to go…and Malley’s Chocolates are my favorite. They do these things called NutMallows, which are marshmallows, nuts, and chocolates, but all their chocolates are great. I order from them all the time. I have it shipped to me here in Los Angeles.”
“This is just a beautiful winery in town. I’m not a huge drinker, but I do like a glass of wine with charcuterie or some cheese, or some good food like that. When I go home to visit, my family usually meets at Thorncreek Winery for a couple bottles of wine, and it’s gorgeous. There’s twinkle lights and there’s oftentimes live music. It reminds me of something that would be in a Nancy Meyers movie or a Nora Ephron movie.”
