As the co-creator, co-writer, and co-star of Flatbush Misdemeanors on Showtime, born-and-bred New York comedian Dan Perlman has no shortage of observations about his Brooklyn neighborhood. These are the spots he frequents off the air.
Less"Rogers Garden is a super fun bar with this great outpoor patio space. After we wrapped the second season of the show—we were filming on location in Flatbush—a lot of us on the crew went to Rogers Garden. It was the first chance we had to hang out and not be stressed about work. It's a very relaxed, chill, welcoming vibe. There's a lot of room there, so it's not overcrowded. I'm not a big drinker, but I'll get wine. Wine drunk is the more fun drunk for me."
"Lips Cafe is an awesome, Black-owned coffee shop with great food and drinks. It has a beautiful interior, with very cool art and design within the space. It's warm and inviting—a great spot to meet a friend. It's a large space, so Lips also hosts a lot of events for the community."
"Aunts et Uncles is the best vegan and vegetarian spot in the neighborhood. It's a Black-owned business, right across the street from Lips, and it's a great spot with great food. I don't eat meat, so when I've gone to L.A. there's a million [plant-based restaurants], but here, it's more few and far between. There's a lot of good fake meat, so you can still pretend you're eating a burger."
"It's nice when the name of the business really sums up what the place is. Cups and Books is a really pretty, independent, Black-owned bookstore and café. I'll go there sometimes if I'm trying to write, because it's a very chill, small spot. If I'm in a place and there's a million other people trying to do the same thing, then I feel crazy working on a script next to five other people who are working on their scripts!"
"Zanmi is one of the best restaurants. The food is fantastic—whatever your diet, whatever time of day. It's a Haitian restaurant, a really good dinner spot, and they probably have brunch also, but I'm never up in the morning. They have very good salads and a bunch of good pastas—that's personally what I can attest to."
"Risbo is a cool spot next to Prospect Park. I love going there when the weather is nice; there's an outdoor seating area that's very chill and pretty and never feels too crowded. If I'm meeting someone for dinner, I'll often suggest Risbo. They have vegetarian bowls, salads, good sides, plantains, a lot of roasted vegetables, hummus, pita—and the mac-and-cheese! I'll act like I'm going to get something healthy and then I'll just get mac-and-cheese."
"When I was first starting stand-up, I performed at a comedy night at Footprints, and the audience hated me. I've made my way back there, which is a testament to how good the food is! Order the Rasta Pasta."
"The Nest is a great bar with live events. There's a biweekly stand-up comedy show downstairs, where I'll perform. It's always a fun crowd with a lot of people from the neighborhood—a game, attentive audience. If you're looking to go out and hear music or see a show in the area, The Nest often has something."
"Greenlight is a fantastic, Black-owned bookstore. They're open until 9pm and have events and readings most nights. It's been in the neighborhood for a long time and is a good spot to go through and browse if you're walking around the neighborhood."
"Picky Eaters is a great spot for sandwiches, gyros, and wings. It's very quick: You can just stop in and pick up some stuff on the go, but it's better than fast food. They're known for their wings."
