The Matterhorn is iconic. The Hörnli Ridge is the route of the first ascent, and that in itself was a tragic epic, phenomenal in difficulty for its time, with one of the great legends, Whymper, being amongst the first ascentionists.
This is one of the more demanding standard routes of all the 4000m peaks. It is exposed, complex and high altitude, with no easy alternatives. The route finding can be tricky in the dark, so it is wise to go at least as far as the edge of the glacier the night before.

The rewards are immense as you are linking the sixth and ninth highest mountains in the Alps, with almost all of the famous 4000m Swiss peaks in view.
