LessKnown as one of the best backpacking routes within Pisgah National Forest, the Art Loeb Trail traverses from Daniel Boone Boy Scout Camp, across Shining Rock Ridge, and into the valley below, where it ends near the popular tourist town of Brevard. At roughly 30 miles, the route is often taken over a period of two or three days, or one for an experienced ultrarunner.
This route is an all-seasons hike into Shining Rock Wilderness, accessible via US-276. A small parking area can accommodate a handful of cars, and an adjacent pull-off serves as overflow. Snow is likely in the winter months, but the route is still passable with appropriate gear.
This loop is an excellent hiking, backpacking, or trail running opportunity to explore the little-traveled Middle Prong Wilderness. Originally logged in the early 1900s, this area became officially designated as a wilderness area in 1984 and provides an excellent opportunity to escape the often crowded trails in the area.
This all-seasons route takes you to the summit of Green Knob, known for its bald, grassy summit among a vast balsam-fir forest. Due to its remoteness, this area sees very little traffic, making it a distinct possibility that you could have the trail to yourself—a huge contrast to the often busy area near Black Balsam and Sam Knob.
Located just a few minutes from Pisgah Forest and Brevard, this is a beautiful hike through dense tunnels of rhododendron. It's also one of the best marked routes near town, making it hard to get lost.

Though all these trails are dog friendly, we highly recommend leaving your four-legged friend at home for this one.
Popular among mountain bikers and trail runners, Daniel Ridge is a moderate hike with a 150' cascading waterfall near the trailhead. If you're limited on time, the falls is only a short walk and perfect for the entire family. Look for the sign that denotes the way.

Overnight camping opportunities are plentiful for those looking to spend the night under the stars. For an experienced hiker or runner, this route could easily be completed in a day.
