LessIf it’s views you’re after in this region, hiking up Stoodley Pike puts you above the winding Rochdale Canal with patchwork fields unravelling across undulating landscapes. A family-friendly walk to the towering monument on a clear day reveals views stretching over Todmorden and Hebden Bridge and across the south Pennines in every direction. Many hiking trails criss-cross Stoodley Pike’s flat summit and you can explore far and wide across to Langfield Common and further south.
On the fringes of Greater Manchester is a gritstone escarpment boasting glorious views of both city and countryside. Hikes to Blackstone Edge and its surrounding moorland are a scenic and tranquil delight, the perfect tonic to the hustle and bustle of the nearby metropolis. Once amongst the moorland, you will find yourself surrounded by peaty ground. White cotton grass covers wide swathes of the moor in early summer, a beautiful sight.
Marvel at the spectacular rocky outcrops and cascading waters of Kinder Downfall. On a clear day, this natural amphitheatre can be seen for many kilometres. Kinder Downfall is often shrouded in mist as the wind blows the plunging water into the air. On sunny days, a series of colourful rainbows arch over the rocks.
An 18th century royal country house set in 2000 acres of manicured gardens and parkland. The estate dates back to at least the 15th century when it was owned by the Stanley family. It was owned by the Stanley family in the 18th century. In 1598, the Lord Chancellor of England Sir Thomas Egerton bought the estate and it remained in his family until the late 20th century.
This historic and emblematic moorland plateau is the highest ground in the wonderful Peak District. Beloved by generations, hikes to Kinder Scout take you to a vast upland that boasts some of the most incredible views in the national park. En route, there are many gems to uncover, from exciting scrambles, tranquil streams, beautiful waterfalls and gritstone edges. From the summit plateau, you can see as far as the distant mountains of Snowdonia, on a clear day that is.
