LessPart of the nearly 1,200-mile-long Mountains to Sea Trail, the Shut-In Trail is a popular trail running route and home to a highly acclaimed trail running race that occurs each fall. The route is most often completed as a point-to-point, arranging for transportation from Mount Pisgah at the end. Most runners opt to complete the route from bottom to top—the same as the official race.
Just a short drive from Asheville, this summit run is a must-do for anyone visiting the region. On the way up, the trail passes Graybeard Falls, Walden's Rock, and Walker's Knob—all excellent destinations for those looking for something shorter.
This route is one of the best ways to experience some of Montreat's premier views. Located about 15 minutes from Interstate 40, and just north of Black Mountain, this area is a favorite among many. According to Montreat.org, the extensive, yet elusive, trail network includes 20 trails and over 40 miles as of 2019.
Just a short drive from Brevard, this classic trail running loop takes you to an exposed slickrock overlook with incredible views towards the Balsam Range. The route departs from the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education, commonly referred to as the Fish Hatchery. Drinking water and restrooms are seasonally available, and parking is plentiful for larger vehicles or trailers.
The Green River Game Lands have claimed one of the top spots among Western NC locals, contending with other nearby destinations like Dupont and Pisgah.
This route is a local favorite, with several options to shorten or lengthen the run. A small parking area at the end of Fisher Creek road serves as the primary trailhead. This tract of land, formerly used as a watershed, was leased in order to develop the now popular hiking trails at Pinnacle Park. The loop is formed using the West Fork and East Fork Trails, with two out-and-back sections to the scenic overlooks.
Just 10 minutes from the Shut In trailhead, Wicked Weed West opened up a small taproom in their brewing facility in 2019, or you could head south about 20 minutes to Sierra Nevada – one of the most aesthetically-stunning breweries in the region.
If you’re looking for something shorter, Lookout Mountain is a local favorite with an excellent view of the “Seven Sisters” across the valley, a long ridgeline with seven major peaks with Greybeard as the tallest. Afterward, head to Lookout Brewing in Black Mountain, aptly named for the nearby peak.
About 30 minutes southwest from Asheville, you’ll find yourself in Brevard, the outdoor hub for the Pisgah Ranger District. John Rock is the must-do trail run and a great option for most runners with moderate fitness. The loop includes an epic slickrock overlook with views of the Davidson River and the high peaks along the Pisgah Ridge. Afterward, stop by Ecusta Brewing in Pisgah Forest.
The Ecusta brewery is popular among outdoor outfitters, guides, and locals, but far less popular among mountain bikers - many of whom navigate across the street to The Hub & Pisgah Tavern.
