8 AM : Get up early and have breakfast at Kult, a legendary bakery housed in the city’s oldest bakehouse, established in 1726. Late risers should be prepared for long queues: Kult is generous with the butter and its fans are legion.
9 AM : Contemplate in silence at Antoniuskirche. The first church in Switzerland made entirely of concrete is a masterpiece of modern architecture and a pilgrimage site for Brutalism enthusiasts from all over the world.
10 AM : Explore the impressive selection of chocolate at Xocolatl to refuel after a stroll through the oldest botanical garden in the world, which includes the only cloud forest greenhouse in Europe, and is just a five-minute walk away.
NOON : Have lunch under Verner Panton’s astonishing seashell ceiling lamp at the Kunsthalle Restaurant, just behind the Tinguely Fountain. Then visit the consistently excellent exhibitions at Kunsthalle Basel.
1 PM : Take a post-prandial bike ride through the idyllic Tierpark Lange Erlen to the Fondation Beyeler. Explore the exhibitions, then admire Renzo Piano’s magnificent building along with the the sculptures in the park, from the Schütte fountain to a snowman by Fischli/Weiss.
3 PM : Take tea by the fireside while contemplating the Rhine at the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois. Then make your way to Münsterplatz and stop in the beautiful hidden terracegarden of the old university.
4 PM : Discover musical curiosities at Plattfon Records in the heart of Kleinbasel. At this eclectic record shop, everyone from die-hard collectors to newbies is welcome.
5 PM : Indulge in apéro while taking in panoramic views of the city at Kulturbeiz 113, where regional drinks and seasonal bites are served. The memorable green exterior staircase leads to the legendary art space Kasko or, later in the evening, to a party at Sudhaus – all located in the same building, formerly a brewery.
6 PM : Discover the new Stadtcasino Basel. This concert hall built in 1876 is world-famous for its excellent acoustics. Home to the Basel Symphony Orchestra, it was renovated by Herzog & de Meuron.
7 PM : Share dinner at Concordia, the rising star on Basel’s restaurant scene. Just months after opening, the establishment had already wooed critics.
