Block parties, kids playing in open fire hydrants, the mouth-watering smell of a jerk chicken thigh cooking on a distant grill…summer is here, and nothing says ‘summer’ like ice cream. Here are some of our favorite NYC spots you should try. 😉
LessI scream. You scream. We all scream for handmade artisanal gelato? Located in the heart of BedStuy, this parlor is the perfect place for families or singles. Bring that cutie with a bootie you met on Tinder here. Your kid got a few ‘A’s’ on their report card? A trip to ‘Brown Butter Creamery’ should be a no-brainer. The staff is warm, friendly, and will patiently indulge all of your annoying requests to sample their many flavor offerings like caramel crème brulée and lychee mimosa. 😋
This truly family-owned and operated ice cream shop is a Prospect Lefferts Gardens treat. Stop by and chat with Omar and Astrid, the husband and wife duo who are just as chill as the ice cream they offer. An ode to their Caribbean roots, ‘Crème & Cocoa Creamery’ offers flavors native to the islands like sorrel, soursop, passion fruit and papaya. If you're a basic girlie (we’re not judging), they offer traditional options like chocolate and vanilla too.
Flight tickets are expensive these days, but if you want to get a taste of some chill vacay vibes right here in Brooklyn, check out this colorful oasis located in Crown Heights. Hand-crafted from scratch, in small batches, ‘Island Pops’ offers exotic ice cream and frozen yogurt flavors inspired by the Caribbean. Guava, soursop, passionfruit, sorrel rum sorbet, you name it.
Like the neon sign hanging inside says, “ice cream solves everything.” Rent going up again? That guy you were feeling ghosted you this week? Boss insisting that you turn your camera on during every team tag-up now? Come here for a pick-me-up and trust that Brooklyn’s very first rolled-ice cream shop will not disappoint. Someone said, “the best things in life are worth waiting for,” so take a break from the dizzying pace of the city and enjoy a cup PJ&I (peanut butter, jelly and ice cream).
This treasure got its name from the historic “Sugar Hill” neighborhood. A literal and figurative reflection of the “sweet life,” this shop is a beautiful marriage between community, food and the beauty of Harlem’s rich Black history. There’s always something new and exciting to try with their seasonal menu and rotating flavor offerings like ‘Tuma Buna,’ a coffee ice cream made in collaboration with music influencer and Harlemite, Tuma Basa, inspired by the Ethiopian coffee-making ceremony–Buna.
The ruby red cups adorned with gold emblems should be a dead giveaway, but if the message isn’t clear enough, this one is for my bougie girlies who love a ‘luxe’ moment. If you’re looking for an “elevated ice crème experience,” look no further than ‘Whipped Urban Dessert Lab.’ This oat-milk and plant-based contemporary parlor offers hand selected fusion goodies like salted pecan, mint chocolate cookie, cinnamon apple crisp, strawberry shortcake and more.
The first thing you’ll notice when you step into Avrilililly's is the decor. It’s a warm and inviting space of bright pastels, beautiful murals, and plush pink seating. You’ll want to spend some time here. Grab a scoop of gelato, two if you’re feeling adventurous, or three (F*** that diet). There are other treats to try like cookies, cupcakes and even gelato sandwiches (whew!). Celebrating a birthday? An engagement? Maybe a divorce? Place an order for a cake, starting at only $80.
