The host of Apple Music Radio’s The Dotty Show is a Londoner, born and raised. Her favourite summer spots are a mix of hidden gems and nostalgic teenage hang-outs that showcase the best of the city, from someone who knows it inside out.
Less“The gentrification of Brixton has been met with a lot of resistance from lifelong South Londoners like myself who still long for the days of its Caribbean market stalls and Black music record shops. But the change has ushered in a slew of new hotspots. At the heart of this is Pop Brixton, an all-encompassing hang-out where you can grab everything from local craft beers to Trinidadian eats. Also check out the great parties happening over summer at their club, Pop Box, such as Supa Dupa Fly.”
“One of my favourite emerging destinations in London is the expansive space at Coal Drops Yard, former home to an 1850s coal warehouse that now serves as a dope spot for everything from coffee to crafts. Be sure to grab some tacos at Casa Pastor, where I always order the short rib sharer plate. A colossal dish for any carnivore.”
“A classic place to spend a few summer hours in South London is at the 200-acre Battersea Park. This was one of my favourite summer destinations when growing up as a teenager in the borough of Wandsworth. Hire a pedal boat and cruise around the lake or jump on a tandem bike and explore Carriage Drive.”
“A short hop from London Bridge station you’ll find one of the jewels in the crown of our capital. Borough Market is a treasure trove for foodies. Whether you’re picking up fresh produce from one of the renowned vendors, or tucking into some of the world’s best street food, there are a million different flavours all tucked under one roof. Be sure to check out nearby Borough Yards for more delicious options, such as Akara, which serves up unforgettable West African gems.”
“For a few months of the year, when London is most agreeable, the sun shines brightest on Camden Lock, an alfresco maze of food vendors beside Camden Market. My personal highlight is Arepazo Bros, a stall serving up Venezuelan arepas. Order the Pabellon with a side of plantain!”
“A trip to East London isn’t complete without a stop off at Spitalfields. An indoor destination for food, fashion and the arts, it is undoubtedly my favourite spot for spontaneous dates. Experience wagyu beef and blue cheese in a bun at The Grime Burger or prawn wontons at Dumpling Shack, before satisfying your sweet tooth at Humble Crumble.”
“A hidden delight in West London, on the Maida Vale end of the Regent’s Canal walk. Walking onto what feels like a boat in the South of France, you are transported from the streets of London into a seafood oasis with some of the kindest and most attentive service in town. Try to grab a table on the canal side!”
“My favourite rooftop restaurant in London, serving up the best oysters in the city. It’s worth waiting at the bar for as long as it takes for an outdoor table to open up! The far-stretching, sun-drenched views of the capital are well worth it on a sunny day.”
“An enchanting botanical garden in Kew that provides a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. My kids never tire of this place and for good reason! You can idle away a few hours in the open spaces and orangeries, or enjoy seasonal activities like forest bathing and wine walks. A space so tranquil you will think you are a million miles from London.”
“The latest addition to the South London scene is a new day-drinking destination in the heart of Brixton Village. Be sure to join their bottomless party on a Saturday afternoon before stumbling down the famous Electric Avenue for Caribbean food at Healthy Eaters.”
