LessA 60 kilometre loop which passes through some of New Zealand's most impressive scenery (and that's saying something) close to the small town of Te Anau in the Fjordland region of the South Island.
The track continues up the valley, after which it climbs gradually as it follows the banks of the Clinton River. The valley becomes noticeably narrower, with granite walls on both sides.
This is the toughest day on the Milford Track. You begin the day with a steep climb up to Mackinnon Pass via a series of switchbacks. You'll climb up to the memorial of explorer Quintin McKinnon, where you will enjoy inspiring views of Lake Mintaro and the Clinton Canyon along the way.
Following the boat cruise from Te Anau Downs (1 hour 15 minutes), you walk through beech forest along the banks of the Clinton River to Clinton Hut, where you spend the first night.
From Dumpling Hut, follow Arthur River to the historic Boatshed. After crossing a large swing bridge and further along the track, you will reach Mackay Falls and Bell Rock. After leaving Mackay Falls, keep a lookout for the fading, man-made rock cuttings on the left alongside a narrow pathway running beside the Arthur River and Lake Ada.
This 32 kilometre track in the heart of New Zealand's Alps is truly spectacular. It could be done in a single push for a hiker with the required fitness and motivation but it is best done at a leisurely pace so that it can be enjoyed fully. As such, it is usually completed in 2 - 4 days.

This is a multi-day tramping and mountain biking track near the coast, and is South Island’s northernmost section of Te Araroa—the epic trail that spans all of New Zealand. Though it can be part of a much longer trek, the 3-5 day tramp on Queen Charlotte Track is well-known as an adventure all its own.
This popular hut-to-hut hike follows the Pelorus River, taking you through dense beech and podocarp forests in the thriving Mt Richmond Forest Park. From the trail’s beginning (Pelorus Bridge) to the end (Hacket Junction) you will have experienced 3-4 days of hard tramping including a steep climb up to The Rocks (939m).
The Pironga Traverse takes you through the dramatic landscapes of Waikato. After roaming through flat farmland and emerald forests, and climbing up a series of steep ridges and bush-covered slopes, you come to the hike’s highlight: crossing the ancient volcanic cone of Mount Pirongia (959m). From this highpoint, you have fantastic views out across the Waikato Basin all the way to the Kaimai Ranges, the west coast harbours, and you can see the Karioi Mountain rising up from the Raglan coastline.
