Ethan Barber is an architectural photographer who specializes in capturing New York City's historic streets. He's assembled his favorite locations in Soho and Tribeca to photograph, along with a curated selection of other spots he loves to visit.
Less"101 Spring Street is the cast iron that is home to the Donald Judd foundation and one of my favorite buildings to photograph. The appearance of the facade can change depending on the time of day, season, and weather. In the summer light it can appear dark grey, but in the winter, it takes on a light bluish color. With a facade that faces southwest, you’re almost guaranteed good light to capture the perfect shot, no matter the time of day."
"The Gunther Building is located on one the most recognizable streets in Soho—Broome Street. This particular cast iron stands out amongst the rest due to its intricate Corinthian columns and stunning curved glass windows. The facade embraces the corner of Greene and Broome street, presenting a rounded edge as opposed to a traditional sharp corner."
"This building is a perfect example of classic cast iron architecture, complete with intricate details extending from the ground all the way up to to the very top of the roof. Nestled perfectly between Canal & Grand, the windows of this building reflect the neighboring cast-iron facades. This creates a stunning visual effect that never fails to catch my eye."
"575 Broadway is a colossal brick building that proudly sits in the heart of Soho. Spanning the entire block, it touches both Broadway and Mercer Street along Prince street, and extends multiple stories high. I find myself drawn to its red brick exterior, complimented with accents painted in green."
"Located above a small alley in Tribeca, is the Staple Street Skybridge. It only sits two stories up, allowing you to get so close you can see the texture of the paint! Surrounded by historic buildings and cobblestone streets, both the north- and south-facing views of this bridge create a distinctly old-world atmosphere. It feels like you've been transported right back to the early 1900s."
"The historic Gideon Tucker House is not the type of building you'd typically expect to see in New York. Built in the Federal architectural style, it’s a remnant of when Tribeca was previously called the Lower West Side and began to shift into a primarily residential area. The home still retains its gambrel roof and original dormer windows, making it a must-see historic landmark on this list."
"Think Coffee is a small chain based here in New York with just over 10 locations across Manhattan and into Brooklyn. Whenever I’m out for a photo walk downtown, I always end up at the Soho location right on Broadway. Not only is the coffee great, but they have my favorite treat: a blueberry yogurt streusel muffin! I also love that this location has plenty of seating–no matter how busy it gets, you can always find a spot."
"MoMA Design Store is my first stop for any need regarding my home and office. Over the years, I’ve slowly brought in pieces of art, lighting, furniture, and decor from the design store. As a current MoMA member, I always make a point to stop by after I visit the museum in midtown, or whenever I’m in Soho and have a little time to kill. The carefully curated product selections never fail to inspire me."
"Housing Works is a community of people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS with a mission to end the dual crises of homelessness and AIDS. Through relentless advocacy, lifesaving services, and entrepreneurial businesses, like the Bookstore, Housing Works is able to sustain their efforts. Fun fact: You may recognize the Bookstore from Taylor Swift’s ‘All Too Well: The Short Film.' Whether you’re a fellow Swiftie, or just in the market for a new (used) book, this is a must-see stop on my route!"
"This shop has one of the most beautifully curated collections of minimalist home goods in the city. From handmade pottery and baskets, to various housewares for your home, every product has an elevated and earthy element. A fixture here in New York for many years, Côte Á Coast is a place I love to visit whether I’m shopping for myself or a gift for a friend."
