"Independent operators make up the fabric of our communities," says restaurant consultant, chef, and Newark resident Jason Wallace—a.k.a. The Restaurant Scientist. These are his go-to Newark spots.
Less"I'm a breakfast for dinner kind of guy, and this is my favorite all day breakfast. Vonda McPherson, she does it right: savory spinach-and-ricotta pancakes, black-eyed pea dip, smothered turkey, and more."
"New Jersey is kind of the diner capital, and this is my favorite diner. My son practices Islam, so it's important to be able to go to a place that you know is authentic Halal. So many items here are really good: the curry chicken, beef short ribs, oxtail. And the portion sizes! You're definitely coming out of here with leftovers for the next day."
"Newark is a large city, but very rarely would you go here and you wouldn't see somebody that you know. It's a very hospitable place, very neighborhood-y. And the fried shrimp: They give you real jumbo shrimp, breaded and seasoned properly, tender and not overcooked. The mac and cheese is really good here, too, as are the collard greens."
