The 205 is a Magic City for Black-owned restaurants AND food trucks. If anyone would know, it's Birmingham's own, Ariel D. Smith, host of 'The Food Truck Scholar' (thefoodtruckscholar.com) podcast. Check out a few of her favorite spots!
LessThe very first time I went I had the loaded chicken philly fries and never regretted it. Urban Smoke started as a food truck and has now expanded to a fully equipped bar and grille in Fairfield complete with a back deck with all the vibes. Make sure you grab a peach patron for me with the hot lemon pepper pork chops!
Zebbie Carney brought hot chicken to Birmingham with his food truck and now is the proud owner of two restaurant locations in downtown Birmingham and Hoover. Love the chicken and waffles here, but I’m hoping the pork chops will make a permanent stay!
My go-to for flavorful plant-based food on the go! From philly’s, skrimps (vegan shrimps), to chickun sammies, Underground Vegan is a great option for the vegan and the ominmore. Try the BBQ Sammy with bakun and fried jalapenos!
Nearly every trip home to Birmingham would include a stop at Birmingham Daiquiris heading straight to Granny’s. You can get the Super Bowl with shrimp, bacon, and sausage like I do but don’t sleep on the other menu options! Grab those pork chops with a side of grits and okra. You’re welcome. Restaurant is coming Summer 2021!
Chicago mix has nothing on the Birmingham mix. There, I said it. If you want to get your popcorn fix while supporting folks that consistently are popping with a purpose, NBN is the way to go. Grab some french toast popcorn for me.
I don’t care if you tell me you don’t eat corn, you haven’t had Aww Shucks! There are a few rules I encourage you to follow with this one: 1) don’t disrespect yourself by getting one; make it a 4-pack and don’t forget to squeeze the lime. 2) don’t leave that trailer without getting a creamy lemon pepper for your 4-pack.
Kristal is truly “the Ace of Milkshakes!” This is my go-to spot for a sugar rush. Whether it’s the red velvet cookies n cream milkshake that comes with a whole slice of red velvet cheesecake on top, elaborate whole cakes, decadent cupcakes or anything in between, K&J’s has a little bit of everything to satisfy your sweet tooth. You can find Pinky rolling through Birmingham often with Encore Rouge in downtown Birmingham or in Forestdale.
Food is always good when it's done da rouge way! My first order was the french onion burger that I can still taste 4 years later. Their pasta will always get you right, but don’t sleep on their chicken sandwiches either. That’s a sandwich that will give any of these fast food chicken joints a run for their money!
They might be one of the newer food trucks on the scene, but they ain’t here to play. Do yourself a favor and get The OG. I love loaded fries and phillies. Their spin on both is amazing!
