Born in 1958 in the Tuscan town of Lajatico, Andrea Bocelli and his powerful vocals are now known around the globe. Here, his children Matteo and Virginia take us on a tour of their favorite places around Tuscany.
Less“We’re here to talk to you about our favorite 10 places in Tuscany,” says Matteo, “and the first one is Lajatico.” “Our dad was born there, so we hold it really close to heart,” adds Virginia. Matteo continues: “There’s a special place to visit that’s called Teatro del Silenzio, the theater of silence, where our father every year does a concert during the summer, and I think it’s very magical. We recommend that place to go, and maybe also drink a glass of wine!”
“Volterra is special because our brother was almost born there! It’s a very fascinating place; it’s a town on top of a hill, surrounded by very historical walls. And it’s also famous for the Museum of Torture,” says Matteo. “They found a lot of torture tools from thousands of years ago, and they decided to do a museum, and it’s not ‘nice,’ but you learn a lot from it,” adds Virginia.
“Since I was born, so for 25 years, we’ve been based in Forte dei Marmi,” says Matteo. “I would recommend for the beach in the summer going to Alpemare,” adds Virginia, “which is our beach club that we own. If you like seafood, get the spaghetti with arselle—it’s spaghetti with little clams, and it’s really, really good.”
“Florence doesn’t need any introduction. Everybody knows the beauties of Florence. You need to spend more than one day there,” says Matteo. “There’s so much to look at and visit,” says Virginia. “It's a very historical town. There are lots of museums, basilicas, churches, and interesting things to see—that you can’t visit all in one day!” “Close by Florence there is the very famous winery of Antinori, one of the greatest wine producers in the world,” adds Matteo.
“The most famous thing in Pisa is the leaning tower,” says Virginia. “That is actually the only thing to visit in Pisa!” says Matteo. “But it’s cool to go up in the tower, because the stairs are made in a circle, and it’s funny because while you are walking up on the side, you lean to the left, and then when you continue, you lean to the right.”
“I love Elba because it’s a very beautiful island, a very nice place to walk around,” says Virginia. “Our favorite restaurant to eat seafood is the one and only Delfino. We love the salmon tartare.”
“If you really like wine, you can go to Bolgheri,” says Matteo. “It’s the land that makes one of the greatest wines in the world; it’s called Masseto. Bolgheri is also famous for the street with all the cypress trees.”
“Pietrasanta is close to Forte dei Marmi, and it’s called the town of art because so many artists have touched that place,” says Matteo. “The main square has a belltower that was made by Giotto, and many other famous artists gave offers to the city. It’s beautiful.”
“Siena is another beauty of Tuscany,” says Matteo. “And they have really good restaurants.” Virgina adds: “You can visit the Palio, which is a cement circle where the horses race in the city.” “It’s a very historical race that they make every year,” says Matteo.
"The Carrara Mountains are famous for their marble. Marmi means marble, and Carrara is right near it, so that's Forte dei Marmi it's named that."
