Get out on trail along the Wasatch Front with these seven hikes in and around Utah's capital city.
LessA moderate, one-mile round-trip hike accesses this classic view above downtown Salt Lake City. There's no shade to be found on the trail, so avoid hiking in the middle of a hot summer day. Sunsets are grand up here, where the panoramic vistas sweep from the Wasatch Front to the Great Salt Lake.
It takes just under a half mile of hiking to reach this prominent overlook on the west side of Antelope Island. Look for bison in the flats below, or gaze out across the waters of Great Salt Lake to the mountains beyond.
The trail network above Brighton offers numerous options for day hikes. To keep things short and sweet, it's a moderate two-mile round-trip hike up to the scenic shores of Lake Mary and back. Add a side spur to Dog Lake for a quieter alpine experience, or turn the hike into a 3.5-mile loop by pressing on to Twin Lakes and Silver Lake.
Gaining 1,000 feet in just over a mile, this strenuous hike rewards visitors with wide views above Salt Lake City. The name comes from the red rock slabs that have been arranged like couches and chairs at the viewpoint.
Choose your own distance on this out-and-back route below Mt Olympus. The trail climbs steadily, passing through aspen groves as it gains elevation. Admire the rocks, look for wildflowers, and turn back wherever seems right. A mountain meadow lies just under three miles up the canyon, making for a good turnaround point for more adventurous hikers.
The canyons on the eastern flanks of the Oquirrh Mountains provide a variety of loops for hikers to explore. Hike out and back along one of the cayons, take a connector trail for a short loop, or go for the full 7-mile circuit if time and conditions allow.
A moderate, two-mile round-trip hike accesses this alpine gem above Albion Basin. This is a great spot for wildflowers, but access can be challenging. The road is often closed due to snow until June, and parking is extremely limited. Plan for a weekday hike to miss the crowds.
