Get away from the bright lights and head out on trail to explore the desert wonderlands around Las Vegas with these seven hikes.
LessThis two-mile out-and-back hike heads out from the Sandstone Quarry Trailhead, accessing some of the spectacular scenery that makes Red Rock Canyon so special. A pocket of water lies tucked up in the sandstone, and views from the trail include the stunning cliffs as well as the Las Vegas skyline in the distance.
For a relatively easy 3-mile loop, head up Fletcher Canyon for 1/3 mile and then take the spur to the right to hike the Eagles Nest Trail. The route offers views above Kyle Canyon as it winds through stands of juniper and pine. Keep an eye out for pricklypear cactus!
An easy 1.2-mile loop makes for a perfect evening stroll among the red rocks at Valley of Fire State Park. Elephant Rock is easily seen from the road, but setting out on foot provides additional vantage points and up close encounters with the landscape's marvelous geology.
It's one mile out and back from White Domes Road to a grand viewpoint over Fire Canyon. Like all hikes at Valley of Fire, there's no shade to be found, so stay away from this one in the high heat of summer.
A moderate 4.1-mile round-trip hike accesses hundreds of rock art panels in the North McCullough Wilderness. The petroglyphs adorn the dark faces of boulders scattered around a ravine. The trail is relatively easy, following a rocky streambed up to the rock art site, but beware the lack of shade and the intense heat here in summer.
Hike this 2.5-mile lollipop loop along the base of towering rock faces. The trail passes through numerous plant communities, including a ponderosa pine forest at the mouth of Pine Creek Canyon.
It's just under four miles round trip to head out and back on this moderate trail above Las Vegas Wash. The landscape offers a dramatic contrast between wet and dry, with green trees lining the wash beneath rocky, largely barren hillsides. Views from the top are great, stretching from Lava Butte to the Muddy Mountains.
