Less"I love to read, and this book store has a next-level collection of classic and current books written by Black authors. I recently went to a book signing they hosted featuring one of my biggest filmmaking inspirations, Spike Lee. Any time I visit there, I leave invigorated.”
“I can spend hours in here. It's like another world: cool, calm, and rich with smells of Palo Santo incense, oils, and soaps in the air. I love the hand-whipped shea butter collection they carry; I always get a lavender and lemongrass selection.”
“Collard greens, fried fish, grits, candied yams: All the traditional Southern comfort foods you need can be found here. This particular location is tied to many high-school memories, birthday parties, and life celebrations for me. At one point, I even worked here as a waitress. It's family-owned, with family vibes, and an absolute staple in the city of Inglewood.”
“Hot & Cool has live DJ sets, poetry and music from local L.A. artists, tasty vegan eats, and incredible art. I always order the vitamin C moss smoothie; it's a refreshing immediate energy boost. Hot and Cool is a vibe.”
"This is my sister and I’s favorite hideout. The point where the blue water and blue sky meet captivates me every time, and I literally feel joy. My favorite thing to do is put on headphones and zone out or stroll to an audiobook, music, or guided meditation. It's the ultimate zen experience for me.”
"Leimert in itself is just a historical place for Black people in L.A. You can find local vendors on Sundays with goods, drum circles, music, phenomenal murals, art stores, coffee shops, restaurants—all Black-owned. Leimert has felt like home for me when I needed it most. My favorite store is 'Sikas': The owner, at 89 years old, is indeed the coolest man on the planet. Find one-of-a-kind jewelry and clothing directly from or inspired by the motherland.”
"My father used to take my sisters and I here when I was a child. I always felt like it was the biggest park in the world. It is pretty big and it contains some of the flyest views of the city in it. I go there often to train and re-set mentally. These days there is even a fruit truck at the top of the hill to greet you with fresh fruit after a workout.”
"I have practiced yoga off and on since 2012. On my journey I have tried many yoga studios in LA. There are some great ones out there, but my favorite has to be Hot 8. The precise method of teaching has really enriched my understanding of proper body positioning and breathing."
"CJ2w/Love boutique is where I go to find high-quality fresh and unique pieces. The owner studied fashion design at Howard University and FIT (NY). She curates the pieces herself. It's family-owned and part of a legacy of the oldest Black-owned boutique in LA. Check it out and tell them Sabi sent you."
"At 16 years old, this was my first job thanks to Miss Apryl. You can get vitamins, fresh juices, good food, and books on health all in one place. Queen Latifah signed a napkin for me there once—a very exciting day for the teenage version of me. My favorite item to order is the veggie Jamaican Pattie, but honestly all of them are good."
