Francesca Delbanco and Nicholas Stoller are the creators, writers, and executive producers of Platonic on Apple TV+. This is their list of places across Los Angeles featured in the critically acclaimed show.
Less“The Omni Hotel on Bunker Hill in Downtown serves as the location of Charlie’s work retreat in episode 3—Sylvia [played by Rose Byrne] agrees to go mainly for a free stay at a corporate hotel—who doesn’t love that? We love it there almost as much as we loved seeing Sylvia eat Charlie’s boss’ speech.”
“One of our favorite scenes in the show is when Sylvia and Will [played by Seth Rogen] ride scooters through the Arts District and then eat fantastic local pizza at Pizzanista! Their pizza is fabulous, it’s attached to a bar, it’s open real late—who says all the good pizza is in New York?”
“Will has his divorce party at the Hollywood Roosevelt—one of the iconic, historic L.A. golden-era hotels. Founded by Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, Louis B. Mayer, and Sid Grauman, the hotel has played host to a million stars (Clark Gable and Carole Lombard famously had their affair in the penthouse!)—as well as the very first Academy Awards ceremony. It’s also a great place to do stuff in the bathroom. Watch the show to see what we’re talking about.”
“You haven’t experienced L.A. until you’ve participated in the time-honored tradition of fighting millennial hordes over thrifted clothing at the Jet Rag rummage sale. Will and Peyton [played by Emily Kimball] share a romantic moment there when Will fights a mustachioed hipster for a Britney Spears concert T-shirt.”
“One of the great things about Los Angeles is how we liberally define ‘hiking’ as pretty much any outdoor walk. Will and Peyton partake in one of the quintessential L.A. experiences—hiking Runyon Canyon. They stroll, they take in the smoggy views, they have a Machine Gun Kelly sighting—classic L.A.”
“Charlie [played by Luke Macfarlane] invites Will to come along with Stewart [played by Guy Branum] and their co-workers to a Dodgers game. It’s going fine until Charlie bullies Will into Lady and the Tramp-ing a Dodger Dog with him. It’s one of the more awkward scenes we’ve ever had the pleasure of shooting.”
“The Arts District in Downtown is Will and Sylvia’s playground throughout the show. It’s a symbol of Will’s obsession with being cool and home to his bachelor pad and brewery. It’s where they ride through the streets on scooters (and throw them over fences). It couldn’t be farther from Sylvia’s suburban world. This neighborhood serves as the perfect backdrop for most of their shenanigans.”
“Will has a business meeting at the Grand Central Market, a place that’s been host to a million phenomenal food vendors, florists, jewelers, etc. since 1917! It’s an L.A. staple. We love Broad Street Oyster, For The Win’s amazing burgers, McConnell’s ice cream, Moon Rabbit, Sticky Rice, Wexler’s… it’s all just so good.”
“This is Will’s go-to neighborhood coffee shop. Because, well, it’s just a supercool spot with damn good coffee.”
“We shot this for San Diego, but Gladstones has as picturesque an oceanside table for brunch or dinner as there is in all of Los Angeles. Plus, no fighter jets in Malibu!”
