Dolly Parton was raised in Tennessee’s Smoky Mountains, but her career took flight when she moved to Nashville. It remains a grounding place for the music icon. She selected her favorite places in the city that tell the story of her legendary career.
Less“I was honored to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999. Back when the hall was on Music Row in their old building, I shot the cover of my 1973 album Bubbling Over in front of the building. From inducting my friend Reba McEntire and first producer Fred Foster, I always get a special feeling when visiting the Hall of Fame, and I bet you will too!”
“If you are visiting the Hall of Fame, they now own the historic RCA Studio B on Music Row. They offer tours of this landmark studio. I cut many of my biggest early hit songs in this building, from ‘Jolene’ to ‘I Will Always Love You.’ Elvis even recorded here too.”
“Nashville has grown so much since I originally moved here in 1964, the day after I graduated high school. The pedestrian bridge downtown was the location used for my 2011 music video for ‘Together You and I.’ Take a walk across the Cumberland River and snap a picture in front of the downtown skyline.”
“I have been a Grand Ole Opry member since 1969. Some of you may have seen the 2019 TV special we did celebrating my 50 years on the Opry. I have so many wonderful memories both onstage and backstage. Now they even offer tours…so see this magical place for yourselves while in Nashville.”
“The Ryman Auditorium is the original home of the Grand Ole Opry. It’s where I was inducted as an Opry member, and it is also where I performed so many times with Porter Wagoner. The benefit concert I did back in 2015 at the Ryman got such great response that it compelled me to take that show on the road…and so, in 2016, we kicked off the Pure & Simple tour. This building holds so many wonderful memories for me. Just like the new Opry building, you can also tour the Ryman.”
“My friend Reese Witherspoon opened this shop in 12 South, a district south of downtown. Reese is currently working with me on my upcoming Run, Rose, Run feature film. She’s got a wonderful boutique store, and you just might spot a few ‘Dollyized’ items that she asked to feature!”
”Broadway has changed so much since I first arrived in Nashville in 1964. The nice people at Acme, which sits at the top of Broadway in Downtown Nashville, recently unveiled a beautiful mural of yours truly. I guess if I can’t meet you in person when you visit Music City, I can be there in spirit!”
“Earlier this year, James Patterson and I conducted our interview for CBS Sunday Morning from Parnassus Books in Green Hills. I love to read. So stop by and tell them I said hello…and while you are there, you can pick up a copy of my novel, Run, Rose, Run with James Patterson, along with my lyric book, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics.”
“In 2004, I hosted the CMT Music Awards. In 2010, I performed with Vince Gill and Keith Urban for the Country Music Hall of Fame All for the Hall event. In 2019, I co-hosted the CMA Awards with Reba McEntire and Carrie Underwood. I have had many wonderful musical memories inside Bridgestone Arena. Go Preds!”
“I first performed at Nissan Stadium during 2003’s CMA Music Fest. I’ve also had the honor of being named the 12th Titan back in 2020. Titan up!”
